8 Dec 2020 FireEye Shares Details of Recent Cyber Attack

What happened to FireEye

“Based on my 25 years in cyber security and responding to incidents, I’ve concluded we are witnessing an attack by a nation with top-tier offensive capabilities,” Mr Mandia, CEO of FireEye said in Tuesday’s blog, “different from the tens of thousands of incidents we have responded to throughout the years”. “The attackers tailored their world-class capabilities specifically to target and attack FireEye. “They used a novel combination of techniques not witnessed by us or our partners in the past,” their blog said. FireEye, one of the top security firm, was set up in 2004. It specialises in investigating attacks in cyberspace against companies throughout the world.

What shows on their statement

“We are actively investigating in coordination with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other key partners, including Microsoft.”

What does this mean to us?

1 Windows 10(Professional or Enterprise version) was compromised.

2 None of the security system(IPS/WAF and Antivirus) works.

3 Their data was stolen by hackers.

Behind the scene

1  Windows 10 almost certainly has the latest update, maybe an 0-day vulnerability has been used.

2 Security system and Antivirus are only working for known threats.

What should I do

1 Categorising your data into different levels and using isolated computers.

2 Using different operating systems (macOS, Chrome OS, Linux) if possible.

3 Contact us for zero-trust network solutions.
